Environmental Improvements

Investing in the environment as well as the homes makes a lot of sense and makes a lot of difference. Places look better, people feel safer and communities come together. From alleygating to landscaping and clean ups to community skips, HMR is delivering improvements that bring about big changes.

Wirral benefits from woodlands, countryside and coast with over 1,500 hectares of public open space including country parks, coastal parks, lakes, play areas and gardens. Wirral's biodiversity supports a huge variety of plants and animals.

Bidston Moss has been transformed as part of a £2.7m Newlands Scheme, the site has been reinvented as community woodland with pioneering commitment to recycling. Pathways, fishing lodge boardwalks and soil have all come from recycled materials.

Mersey Forest have planted 50 trees in the Triangles area of North Birkenhead as part of Green Streets Merseyside Project. The initiative uses urban tree planting as a mechanism to improve the quality of life for people in towns and cities. Mersey and Victoria Parks, Tranmere, have benefited from extensive environmental improvements including lighting, landscaping and refurbishment of the Boxing Club in Mersey Park, a vital resource for young people in the area.

Birkenhead Park has had an £11.5 million transformation including refurbishment of entrances, restoration of lakes, improved drainage and conservation of historic buildings. A new Park Pavilion, with visitor centre, café and Rangers office, encourages wider access to the park and provides a focal point to promote educational
opportunities.

Live Wirral Wardens keep renewal areas clean and tidy through removal of fly-tipping and graffiti, undertaking litter picks, maintaining green spaces and special environmental works. Over 500 tonnes of rubbish removed to date.

The HMR Programme recognises the contribution of built environment to climate change and commits to highest environmental sustainability standards and practices in refurbishment of existing homes and delivery of new homes.

Lovell's New Build development, at Fiveways, uses renewable energy sources to deliver 10% of the scheme's energy demand. Energy efficiency standards exceed the norm for new developments and achieve Code for Sustainable Homes level 3.
